Spyware, like a virus, is nothing more than malicious code. However, spyware doesn't harm your computer, per se. What some spyware does, however, is track the web sites you visit and send you spam e-mail messages, or cause your computer to display pop-up windows related to the sites you have visited.
There are many different types of spyware out there, but they all basically do the same thing and flood your computer with ads that you couldn't care less about.
